Rev. Arvel Dewey Robinson, age 81, of Bremen, Georgia, formerly of Carrollton, GA, passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 31, 2007, following an extended illness.

He was born August 31, 1926 in Carroll County, GA, the son of the late, Rilla Mae Smith Robinson and John Gordon Robinson. He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, having served as a First Gunner's Mate on the Destroyer 713 Kenneth D. Bailey which sought action in the Atlantic Theatre. He returned home in 1945, and in 1947 married the former Mary Ollie Cantrell. The marriage of 60 years produced three daughters.

In 1954, Rev. Robinson answered the call to ministry and began his ministry by serving Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and Providence Baptist Church. His years in ministry also included serving congregations at Tallapoosa East Baptist Church, Waco Baptist Church and Shady Grove Baptist Church which he served on two separate occasions and for a total of over 30 years. In 1995, he retired from fulltime ministry but in retirement, served as interim pastor of Gold Ridge Baptist Church near Ranburne, Alabama. While serving as pastor at Shady Grove, Rev. Robinson spearheaded the effort to build The Shady Grove Community Center. In addition to his ministry at Shady Grove, he was extremely active in a unique program undertaken in conjunction with Sewell Manufacturing Company in Bremen. He served as a coordinator of this religious base program for over 30 years. Rev. Robinson served faithfully for a number of years as a Chaplain for Tanner Medical Center. Outside his family and ministry, one of the other great loves of his life was travel. He led trips to the Holy Land, Europe and Hawaii. His other outside interests included his love of gardening and fishing, especially the trips, he was able to take with his son-in-law, Walt, to Canada.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Junior Lee Robinson, Nelson Robinson, Clifton Robinson and Clyde Robinson; sisters, Eula McCain, Vene Long, Eunice Peek, Videra Gillespie and Retha Hurst. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ollie Cantrell Robinson; his daughters and their spouses, Janice and Mike Milo, Kathy and Randy Lott, all of Carrollton, and Susan and Walt Sapronov of Atlanta; sister, Rayve Brock of Carrollton; brother, Rev. Jesse Robinson of Bremen; five grandchildren, Ami and Jeff Mayo, Andrea Lott, John and Hillary Milo, Natalie Milo and Sophia Sapronov; also a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral service conducted November 3 at Shady Grove Baptist Church with Dr. Rick Hurst, Rev. Danny Herrin and Rev. Ricky Shadrix officiating. Pallbearers are John Milo, Jeff Mayo, Randy Capes, Steve Forbus, Julian Cook, and Steve Thompson. Music provided by Betty Sue Smith, Carol Jackson, and Alan Schantz. Interment in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with The American Legion Post 143 presenting the flag. Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel, Carrollton in charge of arrangements.
