Bonaventure started as the Evergreen Cemetery Company which was privately owned but sold to the City of Savannah in the early 1900s and renamed Bonaventure.
Located on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River amid live oaks adorned with Spanish moss, Bonaventure Cemetery was established on land from the Bonaventure Plantation. Henry Urban was the architect. On the National Register of Historic Places, the cemetery is famous for its mention in John Muir’s book "Thousand Mile Walk" and John Berendt’s book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil", as well as the Clint Eastwood movie of the same name). It often makes lists of most beautiful cemeteries in the world and contains many examples of fine sculptures.
