Born in 1828 in Marion County, Tennessee, the son of Hercules and Elizabeth (nee Robinson) Jones. In the Fall of 1830, his family moved from Tennessee to Looking Glass Prairie, Illinois.

James Jones married Eliza (nee Duncan) Jones, the widow of his older brother, Thomas Jones, on 2 Dec 1849 in Clinton County, Illinois. To this union, the following children were born:

Riley Jones (1850 - > 1910)
Sidney Breese Jones (1855 - 1935)
Richard Jones (1857 - > 1870)
Melissa Adaline Jones Greenfield (1859 - 1887)

James enlisted as a private in Capt. Andrew J. Randall's Company E, 117th Illinois Infantry on 19 Sep 1862. On 5 Feb 1864, he was captured in Clinton, Hinds County, Mississippi and sent to Andersonville Prison. He perished on 16 Sep 1864 in this prison due to scurvy. His marker is number 8971, in section H.
